Every month, millions of South Africans depend on a single transfer of money. For a grandmother raising grandchildren, it pays for school shoes. For a person living with disability, it keeps the lights on. And for an unemployed young adult, it puts food on the table.

SASSA stands for the South African Social Security Agency. It was established under the SASSA Act of 2004. It operates under the Department of Social Development. And its mission is simple. Get financial help to the people who need it most.

By 2026, SASSA serves nearly 26.5 million beneficiaries. That is almost half of South Africa’s population. Managing this scale requires a strong digital system.

The SASSA online application system was built to remove barriers. You no longer need to take a full day off work to queue at an office. You no longer need to spend transport money just to submit a form. You can apply from your phone. From home. At any time of day. And for free.

3. SASSA Means Test: Income and Asset Thresholds 2026

Most SASSA grants require you to pass a means test. This checks your income and assets. And if you earn or own more than the allowed limit, your application will be declined.

💡 SRD R370 Income Rule

Income must be below R624 per month. Any bank deposit above this amount in the month of assessment can trigger a decline. Even a once-off family payment. If this happens, you have the right to appeal at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals within 90 days.

The Foster Child Grant has no means test. The child is considered a ward of the state. Financial support flows through the foster parent to the child.
