Introduction to SASSA “South African Social Security Agency”
The South African Government initiated the “SASSA” in April 2005 under the supervision of DSD (Department of Social Development). As of 2019, Susan Shabangu, Minister of Social Development, put Busisiwe Memela-Khambula forward as a CEO (Chief Executive Officer), and accordingly, SASSA’s first and foremost duty is to dole out grants for indigent citizens and to govern South Africa’s Social Security System.
It is a welfare project that aims to recede poverty and improve the integrity of the 8 types of SASSA grants that are disbursed at the national level. A Ministry of Social Development issued its official press release, which said that SASSA oversees its financial affairs. It is a phenomenal programme for impoverished people, especially for women, who are dejected about their monthly means. South Africa’s Finance Minister, Mr Enoch Godongwana, said in his recent budget speech, “We are increasing the amount of SASSA grants to R217.1 billion for the financial year 2023-2024 and will be increased to R259.3 billion for FY 2025-2026 concurrently”. This budget covers dependent care, child support, disability, foster child, grant-in-aid, war veterans, and old age grants. About R34 billion has been earmarked for SRD R350 Covid-19 for the next financial year 2025-2026. So, President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce in his address to the Nations regarding the expansion and improvement of the grant structure of SRD R370 Covid-19. Remember, the said budget allocation is for all types of SASSA grants.

To ensure that the misappropriation of funds is avoided, SASSA has kept the process transparent so that grants can change the financial status of attenuated people. What is the Means Test?
SASSA grants are for impoverished people in South Africa whose financial situation is insufficient to meet their daily expenses. SASSA will first liaise with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to bear out your identity. The agency will then conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether you are a low-income native or not. First and foremost, they will verify your information about your bank statements, tax returns, or any investments you have made.
