Prior to this increase, the amount paid to beneficiaries up to March 2023 was R2090. The Ministry of Finance has decided to pay R100 in two installments, R90 & R10.

Medical Panel Evaluation

SASSA’s Medical Panel

SASSA has a dedicated medical panel that assesses the applicant’s disability and prepares the final medical reports, which are crucial for receiving the disability grant. Applicants need to acquire a report from this specific medical panel, as SASSA recognizes this report as the only authentic one. The medical panel’s recommendation to SASSA about the applicant’s ability to work and eligibility for a disability grant is a significant factor. However, it’s essential to note that the final decision rests with SASSA, not the Medical Board.

When the Medical Board confirms your eligibility for a Disability Grant, SASSA will start processing your application. In its assessment, the medical board also describes whether the disability is temporary or permanent, as some disabilities are curable. Therefore, applicants’ medical examination process for this purpose will continue in the future. As a result of these medical reviews, SASSA has the power to change its decision.

Review System for Disability Grant

SASSA introduced a review system for recipients of disability grants. They can conduct it whenever they want, but they notify their beneficiaries 03 months before. The organization will write a letter to the beneficiary detailing the place, time, and date. Hence, SASSA representatives do not face any difficulties in your availability when conducting a review.

So, SASSA will cross-check all the details in which you go for approval for Disability Grant. For example, they will verify the income and asset documents you provide when you submit your application. SASSA will suspend the grant if the documents provided do not match your actual income and assets.

In some cases, they will check that the beneficiary is alive and require a life certificate to be completed. Even when a refugee’s special permit expires, SASSA will review it so that the refugee can get a grant again. After completing the reviews, the SASSA’s representative will issue the beneficiary a clearance or denial receipt.

What Should Beneficiaries Do before Reviews?

Now, it becomes your responsibility to inform Sassa about any changes in your life circumstances. Whether it is related to your health, financial matters, or a change of address, whatever it is, you must inform Sassa. If you hide something from Sassa, it will be considered fraud, and they will never tolerate it.

How much is Disability Grant 2024?

Your application will be approved once you meet all of SASSA’s statutory criteria. You will be awarded the SASSA Disability Grant amount of R2180 from the date of application.

  • In case of the death of a beneficiary.
  • Taking grants from any other welfare organization in South Africa.
  • If the grant is not received for 3 consecutive months.
  • When the period of temporary disability of the beneficiaries ends.

Final Thoughts

Hence, it was the big news of enhancement in grants by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) that implemented the Old Age, Care Dependent, and War Veteran & SASSA Disability Grant. The amount of R100 was increased and disbursed from April 2024. It will be doled out in two installments; the first was R90, which became R2180, and R10 will be added in October 2024 and rise to R2190

In such types of grants, medical reports are important; that is why SASSSA’s medical panel assesses applicants’ disabilities and recommends whether they are unable to do work and are entitled to a grant. Applicants can apply for a grant by visiting the nearest SASSA office or referring a family member or friend.

Once your application for a grant is approved, you will receive R2180. If your application is rejected without reason, you have the right to appeal within 90 days. How could your grant be canceled? It might be for various reasons, including the death of a beneficiary, taking grants from other welfare organizations, not receiving the funding for 03 consecutive months, or ending temporary disability.
