What is an SRD Grant?

The Ministry of Finance introduced the SRD Grant (The Social Relief of Distress Grant) under the South African Social Assistance Act of 2004. Initially, when it was introduced, it was a temporary three-month welfare program that disbursed cash. During COVID-19 days, SASSA was started doling out food parcels. In May 2020, SASSA distributed food parcels to 500,0000 homes within a month. Later on, food parcels were disbursed through cash and bank vouchers. Alternatively, the government introduced the SRD grant by giving 350 rands to natives, immigrants, asylum seekers, and particularly those who are out at elbows.

Officially, the SRD R350 is the extended version of the SRD Grant. It was started in May 2020, when COVID-19 (coronavirus) engulfed the world by storm. The coronavirus brought about unemployment on a massive scale worldwide. To protect the natives from monthly financial issues, various countries worldwide have started welfare programs. SASSA used to pay R350 every month during the Corona days, which is why this grant became famous as the Social Relief of Distress Fund (SRD) R350.

Furthermore, SRD R350 is a welfare programme to protect its natives from the pernicious effects of COVID-19. The people of South Africa were elated when the government announced this grant in May 2020. Therefore, more than 80% of the country’s population applied for this COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Fund.

SASSA’s SRD R350-R370 Increase

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) established a welfare programme named the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD R350) for South African citizens. It is also for asylum seekers and refugees who have special permits to live in South Africa. During COVID-19, SASSA provided temporary financial assistance to millions of people, particularly those who were under a cloud regarding their monthly means.

In October 2022, Enoch Godongwana, the Minister of Finance, said in an official statement that even if COVID-19 is over, the harmful financial effects are still attenuating people. He asserted that this social grant provided financial assistance to beneficiaries in unemployment, education, and health. Therefore, it was decided to extend the “SRD R350” grant until March 2024. After that, it was further extended until 2026, and the amount was enhanced to R370.
